Recommended books for children with speech, language, communication needs or anxiety

Anyone that knows me will know that I LOVE books. My mum often recalls stories of me reading at a very young age. She had to hide her magazines or I would sneak off with the latest women magazine and then have some interesting questions about what I read!!

Imagine is full of books of all different kinds and I'm often asked for recommendations. Please note, I'm not affiliated or associated with any of these books, they're just personal favourites to use in therapy.

Children with speech sound difficulties (pronunciation)

Rhyming stories and stories with repeated phrases:

1. Giraffes can't dance

2. Room on a broom

3. The smartest giant in town

4. Brown Bear

5. We're going on a bear hunt

6. Dear Zoo

Children with Selective Mutism/ Separation anxiety

1. My friend Daniel doesn't talk

2. Little by little

3. The huge bag of worries

4. That's me loving you

5. The invisible string

6. The beautiful oops (amazing for children who don't like to make mistakes)

7. Can I tell you about Selective Mutism (for older children)

Younger children to support language development

1. That's not my ..... series

2. Dear Zoo

3. Oh Dear!

4. Books that make sounds/ press for nursery rhymes

5. Ten little ..... series

Books to promote acceptance, understanding and recognition of different cultures and to be yourself

1. All are welcome

2. We are family

3. Bravo Anjali

What to do with the books?

  • Enjoy them together. Have fun turning the pages and looking at the pictures

  • For books with repetitive endings e.g. Dear Zoo- on each page it ends with so I sent him back. After a few times you can leave a pause "so I sent .......... (pause) and wait for your child to fill this in.

  • Talk about what you see in the pictures

  • Avoid questions, don't ask "what's this?", instead point and comment "A car, I see a car"

  • Let your child turn the pages so you are both involved

Enjoy. May you and your child's world grow through books. Tara @ Imagine Therapy N.I. <3
